A small town around 100 kms away from Pune, Bhigwan is also known as the "Bharatpur of Maharashtra." The hotbed of migratory birds during the winter season, Bhigwan is at one end of the Yashwant Sagar Reservoir forming the backwaters of Ujjain dam that is considered as one of the best wetlands attracting migratory birds from all over the globe. A delight for the bird lovers, one of the major attractions of this place is the pink flamingos. The best time to visit is from early January to late February.
The place is dozens of kms long with 2 major bird sights - Diksal and Kumbhargaon. The bird sight in Diksal is 5 to 6 kms inward near 'Juna Pahl', meaning 'Old Bridge.' A lot of birds gather here in winter. You also rent a boat from here to go into the waters.
Kumbhargaon is almost 2 kms ahead of Bhigwan. Also called as Flamingo Point, this place is best early morning. You can also expect to see various types of Ducks, Egrets, Herons, Raptors and Waders along with the flocks of hundreds of flamingos.
Being a bird hotspot, it is very easy to sight the birds in Bhigwan and is truly a delightful sight to watch. You can take this trip in a single day. Start from Pune at 6 am so that you reach by 9 am to Bhigwan. Enjoy the bird watching. Have lunch and start your journey back.
If left with some time, you can also visit Bhuleshwar Temple, a temple of Shiva is situated on a hill and is around 45 kms away from Pune. It used to be a fort named 'Mangalgadh'. It is believed that Parvati danced for Shiva and they went to Kailash from here and got married.
