Bhimtal is situated at an altitude of 1370 mts above sea level and is about 22 kms from Nainital. The major attraction in Bhimtal is the Bhimtal Lake which has an island at its centre. Much older than the nearby city of Nainital, Bhimtal is an ancient place named after the second brother of the Pandavas, Bhima of Mahabharata. Bhimeshwara Mahadev Temple, an old Shiva temple on the bank of Bhimtal lake, is believed to have been built when Bhima visited the place during the Vanvas of Pandavas. Near the Bhimeshwar temple is the small hill known as Garg Parvat, which is the source of the river Gargi. Nal Damyanti Tal, is a small natural lake about 2 kms from Bhimtal. Legend has it that the palace of famous king Nala capsized into this lake. About 5 kms from Bhimtal is a hill known as Hidimba Parvat named after the demoness Hidimba of Mahabharata. Vankhandi Maharaj, a monk and environmentalist who lives on the hill now has created a sanctuary known as Vankhandi Ashram for the wild animals around the hill. The hill of Karkotaka is named after Karkotaka, a mythical cobra. Famous for its Nag temple, it is visited by thousands of people on every Rishi Panchami to worship the Nag Karkotaka Maharaj.
