One of the Majestic Waterfalls lying in Tamil Nadu State of Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri Districts also sharing the border with Karnataka. It is also called as Nisarga Water Falls / Nisarga of India due to its beauty of water fall on the background of greenish mountains.
This place is around 180 kms from Bangalore on the Hosur Highway near Dharmapuri District, and is perfect one day holiday destination for water / nature enthusiasts who would like to spend their time in banks of River Cauvery which falls over the rocky bed.
The (rocky) stones embedded created by the water fall are one of the oldest carbonate granites in Asia and also in the world. The rocks formations were the resultant of water gushing on them from ancient times and it is said as archaeological treasure of India.
This water fall is created by the river Cauvery which originate at Western Ghats in Tala-Cauvery of Coorg near Bagamandala in Brahmagiri Hills and water from there flows down the hill in to the many reserve forests gathering force and streams in to this area with high currents and creates the magnificent fall from 20mtr i.e., 66 feet height and flows in to the Mettur dam of Tamil Nadu.
This falls gets its name from 2 kannada words Hogenakkal: Hogge - Smoke and Kallu - Stone, this name is still in kannada architecture as it was in the boundaries of Karnataka in the ancient times and currently lies in Tamil Nadu sharing the border with Karnataka. The word Hogenakkal is arrived as water falling down from the stone bed creates smoke of water over the surface.
This place is also famous for the Coracle Rides which operate only in seasons as in water currents will be high in monsoon, also one can opt for oil massages on the shore of river bed which can give you high relaxations.
One side of the water fall has Melagiri Hills which is covered with green vegetation in monsoons; the sight of hills on the background of Hogenakkal is exoreic and also good outing place nearby Bangalore, as you can enjoy your precious time peacefully without any strain or stress of your day to day life.
