Not just humans, now even tigers are achieving the high altitudes of North. The evidence of Camera traps revel that a tiger had visited Askot in the upper reach of Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand. At an altitude of 12,000 ft one can only expect snow leopards, but this striped cat gave a surprise by its visit.
Being a part of an ongoing biodiversity conservation project, the images were captured by Bilal Habib, a scientist at the Wildlife Institute of India. "There are some old British literary documents which mention the sighting of tigers at high elevations, but as far as I know there's been no scientific or photographic evidence regarding this," he said.

It is confirmed that the location is highest ever visited by a tiger in India. Worldwide, the highest altitude where a tiger's presence has been recorded is in Bhutan at 13,000 feet. DVS Khati, principal chief conservator of forests (wildlife), said the place where the tiger was located is outside the protected areas. Infested by poachers, it is quite close to the Nepal border.
The wildlife department is trying to join hands with its counterparts in Nepal for strengthening up the security of tigers. It is also coordinating with the state police, Indo-Tibetan Border Police and Seema Suraksha Bal (SSB) for the same. More detailed studies are required to be done before one can talk about a shift in the big cat's territorial pattern, said Bivash Pandav, a tiger expert at WII.
"The tigress whose images were recorded appeared to have come to Askot through the Kali River. Although such sightings are uncommon, tigers at high altitudes of 12,000 to 14,000 feet have been found surviving in Nepal."
