Bailey Bridge Facilitating Rohtang Tunnel Construction Collapses In Himachal Pradesh

 Bailey bridge built for the purpose of constructing Rohtang Tunnel was collapsed today due to strong currents in the Chandra river while a truck, carrying construction material, was passing through it. Fortunately there was no casualty and the driver was relojes imitacion rescued immediately and is in sound health. Heavy rains and flash floods have caused landslides, causing a lot of damage to the roads in the area.

Chief Engineer of Rohtang Project Brigadier D N Bhatt said, "The Bailey bridge providing bolsos imitacion approach to the tunnel at the north portal near Telling village at Sissu in Lahaul and Spiti suddenly collapsed but there was no loss of life". He further added that the truck fell into a ditch and would be salvaged in few days. The bridge is expected to be restored in four-five days days, he said, further assuring that the progress of work would not be hampered in any way.

Bailey bridge was a temporary bridge made up of lattice steel and was designed for rapid assembly from prefabricated parts. Such bridges are used especially in military operations. The purpose of the tunnel is to provide round the year access of Rohtang Pass which presently remains close for 6 months in a year due to snow.

The 8.9-km-long tunnel is constructed to connect Manali with Lahaul and Spiti Valley. It will shorten the length of Manali-Sarchu- Leh road by 46 km.  This tunnel when complete would be one of India’s longest traffic tunnels.
