15 States, 3000 miles, Motor free path for bikers. Sounds dreamy Right? This is the East Coast Greenway Bike Trail which would stretch from Calais, Maine to Key West, Florida. Imagine yourself riding from Maine to Florida in 2 months covering 50 miles each day with large parts of your trail being traffic free greenways.
Since 1991, the effort to turn this dream into reality is on and the good news is 850 miles of path is already connected and East Coast Greenway Alliance (ECGA) is working actively to join more trails and greenways in order to complete other 200 miles by 2020.
According to Dennis Markatos-Soriano, the executive director of ECGA, “It’s not a question of when the Greenway will get done, it’s a matter of how fast.” Although the budget has almost doubled to $ 1 million, but still it needs to go a long way.
The ECGA is not creating the trails themselves, rather work in coordination with the local organisations and agencies taking advantage of local knowledge thereby decentralising the work giving a sense of local ownership. Much of the East Coast Greenway already exists in the form of small paths along riversides, or disused railway lines. The main work is to bring all these parts up to code and connect them all together.
It is been ensured that path is strong enough for a full-loaded touring bike, and is around 10 feet, wide enough for safe passing. With the admirable job being done by this organisation, locals are worth the praise as it is a volunteer based project. A future paradise not only for bikers, but for pedestrians, horsemen etc, this lane would be one of the universally appealing project.
Greenway stays away from the precious motorable road in complete isolation and peace which is just us cyclists like it :P
