The adventure capital of India, Rishikesh, is most popular for White water rafting on The River Ganges. The extreme water sport has attracted people from all over India and overseas. This has led to a 90% increase of camps along the 36 km stretch in the last decade. Many of them are unregulated.
In December, The NGT (National Green Tribunal) court had denied permission for camping activity along the Kaudiyala to Rishikesh stretch till strict regulation is in place.
The NGT court then asked Uttarakhand’s government to take charge, form a regulation report on the rafting camps and seek approval from the country’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF).
Now, in a latest rafting Camps report by Uttarakhand State govt, nearly 20 beach camps by the Ganges are declared unsuitable and dry-pit toilets are strictly forbidden. The dry-pits are to be replaced by bio-digester toilets.
The report was created on the basis of recommendations provided by the Wildlife Institute of India. It will now go to the MoEF who will give their final approval by 9th March. All camps are banned till further notice, but rafting continues.
