To promote the use of cycles in the city, K-East ward of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has allotted cycle stand at Jogeshwari (East) Railway Station. This initiative is taken by the departments for the first time in the city. The ward has allotted parking space for 10 cycles in 47 different pay and park lots in the ward.
Municipal commissioner, Ajoy Mehta last month had asked the assistant commissioners of 24 wards across the city to work on the cycle parking project and see that it benefits the maximum people. Later, Mehta visited the place personally and appreciated it.
To make it a successful project, a team of engineers from the maintenance department of K-East ward worked together under the leadership of assistant commissioner Devendra Jain. Devendra said, "Our local corporator, Ujjwala Modak was very supportive and played an active role in making it possible. The staff worked out a final plan and implemented it meticulously and the response so far is amazing,"
He stated that presently 24 cycles can be parked but if the demand increases, they do not mind to work upon the new project. Sub-engineer Nisha Dalvi expressed that while they were working upon this project, they tried to implement it in such a way that more and more of the people can use it. “We had expected that people will not use it, but after opening the facility, we received a tremendous response. From the very next day, people started using the facility. In fact, the collegians came up to us and expressed relief as now they can cycle it to the station before boarding a train," said Dalvi, The designed a cycle model to give an identity to the park space which is a concept of western countries.
A person has been allotted for the security of the cycles. This initiative helped the ward to grab three to four NGO’s for maintaining the space and security. An engineer said that the stand costs 4 lacs. "We are trying to look at parking space corners which are though at prominent places, but at the end of the road or corners which are not creating an obstacle to traffic or public movement. These days’ modern and advanced cycles are inclined for this one needs specific space and size of the stand. We are working on such finer nuances," he said.
