But now, the mufti led Modi government has made the procedure of obtaining permits a lot easier for foreign tourists. The government has dismissed security agencies to ease the permit procedure. Foreigners visiting Leh and other parts of Ladakh will now get Protected Area Permit (PAP) and Restricted Area Permit (RAP), respectively, within 10 days against a month earlier. Also the time period for the application of Permits has been reduced from 2 months to just a month for Foreigners.

Single travelers can also seek permits on the basis of the recommendation of the state government concerned. It will take not more than 10 days under the eased norms to sanction or deny a permit to a foreign applicant after the background check has been done. However, home ministry officials said citizens of Afghanistan, Pakistan and China will continue to require prior approval of the Centre before visiting any of the areas classified as "protected" or "restricted".
