Shimla:  A moment of happiness is felt as the Indian railways have decided to provide the rail connectivity from Lahaul-Spiti and Leh along the China border. But the laying of the railway line between Manali and Leh shall take some time as the railways want to provide an  internal rail connectivity within Leh region by laying a track between Bema and Nyoma covering an area of 250km as part of its short-term plan as stated by  Sonam Dawa Lonpo, LAHDC’s chief executive.

Situated at the altitude, ranging from 2,300m to 5,000m above sea level, Leh has an area of 45,100 sq km. The Zanskar, the Ladakh and the Karakoram are the three parallel ranges of the Himalayas which make the district a mountainous place.

Sonam said that the visiting team has advised that it would be easier to lay rail line along the banks of the Indus due to the plain area. 75% population of Leh district will be covered and also will prove to be of great benefit to the armed forces deployed in the area if the rail line is laid between Bema and Nyoma.

He said, “LAHDC is ready to provide the required land to the railways and authorities will inform us about the exact requirement of land within a week. Once a written request is received, formalities would be completed immediately to transfer the land.”

‘Road, rail and air link are vital to keep the enemy at bay in Ladakh sector,’ said Defense expert Brig Khushal Thakur (RETD). He further added that the internal rail network in the Leh region would help increase the mobility of troops.

Approximately 10 years ago, Greater Leh Master Plan too had made the budgetary provisions for rail infrastructure within Leh. And the same way, the rail line will hit the Leh district soon.
