It is a moment of pride as the glory of Maharashtra, i.e., Raigad Fort is soon going to dwell in the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Raigad has always been one of the places in the mind of the trekkers for trekking but has often failed to get the importance. Rather than a tourist attraction place, it is more of an asset of the history of Maratha culture. But the wait ends as within some time, it will be featured among the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Raigad is a hill fort situated in the greenery of Mahad, Raigad of Maharashtra, India. The Maratha king Shivaji Maharaj had built this fort and made his capital when he was crowned King of a Maratha Kingdom. And from this fort itself Shivaji had laid the foundation of the Hindavi Swarajya. Since then, the Raigad Fort has made its name in the history.
To climb the step of recognition, the Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis declared that the Maharashtra government will leave no chance and find every possible way to ensure that the Raigad Fort finds its way to the prestigious list. "There are several forts in Maharashtra... but none of these figures in the UNESCO. We will ensure that this (Raigad fort) gets recognition internationally," stated Fadnavis, in his address at the 343rd commemoration ceremony of Chhatrapati Shivaji's coronation which took place on Monday.
The moss covered around the fort is currently in a hazardous state, and thus an aerial tramway is accessible which takes less than 20 minutes to reach. To improve the condition of the fort, state government has already approved a development plan which not only focus’ on the fort but also of the other 21 villages which fall under the radius of 7 km of the monument.
Currently, Maharashtra only has four of its places recorded among the World Heritage Sites – the Elephanta Caves, the Ajanta Ellora Caves of Aurangabad, the Western Ghats and The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai. And now the Raigad Fort of Mahad is on its way to join this list.
