The SAR Pass is in Parvati Valley of Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, a state of India.

 

SAR, in local dialect, means a lake. While trekking, across the path from Tila Lotni to Biskeri Ridge, one has to pass by a small, (normally) frozen lake (SAR) and hence the name SAR Pass Trek.

 

It is immensely popular for rappelling and mountaineering among adventure lovers. The trails here are extremely beautiful along with breath-taking views. Though a major part of this pass is covered with snow, but many rock climbers come for the best mountaineering experience every year. However, summers are considered the best time for rock climbing here. Also, trekking expeditions are also carried out well at SAR Pass.

 

From Khirganga to the site of Tunda Bhuj (3285m) the Parvati Valley cuts a steep-sided gorge through the mountains and as the altitude increases, the thick, coniferous forest gradually makes way for patches of meadowland scattered with boulders. Several tributaries join the main Parvati River and numerous waterfalls cascade down the steep valley sides. Beyond Tunda Bhuj, the conifers continue only as far as the Basuki Nal tributary but groves of silver birch continue to line the valley, quickly becoming sparse as the altitude increases.

 

It is a very rock valley of Himachal Pradesh, often characterized by rocky outcrops and many alpine flower plantations. This valley has mica in abundant and provides sample opportunity for rock climbing to the people. It’s a back packer’s haven, therefore, is great for trekking location too. Adventure lovers flock to participate in the climbing expeditions held in this valley.

 

The SAR Pass trek is ideally poised to be the first step in your life-long love affair with the mountains. SAR, in local dialect, means a lake. While hiking across the path from Nagaru to Biskeri Ridge somewhere high up in the Parvati Valley, one passes by a small, (normally) frozen lake, which gives this trail its name. A small and beautiful village located around the picturesque union of the Parvati River and a vibrant stream called the Grahan Nalla, which gets its name from the first campsite of this trek. Grahan (altitude 7700 ft.), a calm and serene village amidst the mighty mountains is 10 km from Kasol and takes around 4 hours to reach. It is a self-contained village of sixty families with electricity, water and phone connection.
