Deoria Tal and Chandrashila Trek is a short trek to the most spellbinding peaks in Garhwal district. The first part of this trekking journey takes you to Deoria Tal where you can relish the charming beauty of its lake. From the Chaukhamba Peak you get gorgeous views of the Deoria Tal Lake and its mirror-like waters.
The trail leading to Chopta is covered in lush green meadows nestled in the Himalayas. This trail leads to the Tungnath temple, the highest Shiva shrine in the world. Apart from the exotic flora and fauna along the way, you can also feast your eyes with sights of several majestic peaks namely the Bandarpoonch, Kedar and Chaukhamba. After a kilometer-long walk from Tungnath, you arrive at the summit of Chandrashila peak. The view of snow-capped peaks and the undulating valleys surrounding the area makes this trek worth the effort.
There is also the additional experience of lodging at the Himalayan Eco Lodges and Camps at Kund, which form the base for the Deoria Tal and Chandrashila Trek and overlooks the Mandakini River gushing below the Kedar peak.
Three things are stunning about the Deoriatal to Chandrashila peak trek.
Forests with plenty of variety
Deoriatal has the best forest trek. If you take the section between Deoriatal lake and Bhrujgali camp, it is sometimes difficult to imagine the variety of jungles. There are sections with thick wooded trees, there are moss-covered trails through enveloping tunnels and there are trails that weave through clearings in the jungles.
Bird-watching
There are hundreds of birds to sightsee and photograph. If there was a birders’ trail, then it has to be Deoriatal.
A grand summit climb
Finally, the summit climbs to Chandrashila. As you climb up, one by one, all the major summits of Western and Eastern Uttarakhand pop into view. Standing on top of Chandrashila summit is a blessing and not an achievement as nowhere can you see the tallest summits of India so close.
