Madhugiri is small town located in Tumkur District and is at distance of 100 kms from Bangalore. Madhugiri is the headquarters for education as declared by the state government of Karnataka.
On hearing the name of Madhugiri one thing flashes the mind is the Madhugiri Peak which is the Second largest monolith Rock of Asia after the Savandurga of Magadi Dist. The name Madhugiri in Kannada means Honey Hills (Madhu: Honey – Giri: Hill).
The main attraction here is the trekking to reach the madhugiri peak and view the surrounding forest as it is at a altitude of 1250mtrs. The trek path of madhugiri goes from moderate to difficulty due to adjacent steep on the way up.
Apart from trekking the other famous thing of this place is the Fort dedicated to the Hyder Ali during the 16th and 17th century, as the remains of the fort is even explored today the fort mains has 3 gateways to enter it as they are Antaralada Bagillu: the Inner Door, Diddibagilu: name used to describe Northern and Southern Entrance and Mysore Gate: The Main Gateway.
The above 3 Gateways of the fort is the lead way to the peak which as a temple dedicated to lord Krishna which is ruined and remains of it can be seen. And actual Trekking or Hiking is started from this place as the path as few steps marks incared in the monolith and on the it goes stepy and left out in the middle and further continues near to the peak.
Trekking is must do activity here as we offers customized outing packages to the corporate teams and rock climbing enthusiasts. The peak is around 3600 ft tall and trekking is moderate at the start and gets stepy as you go by, one needs to conserve a lot of energy and fitness to reach the peak, on the way to the peak you can find the fort of madhugiri. From this one should trek very carefully and slowly as its gets steepier at times but it’s worth a trek to reach the peak.
As the madhugiri monolith is surrounded by the Timmalapura Forest one can see the beautiful greenery from the peak and also enjoy the sunrise and sunset from the peak. It is dense forest area often we can spot a lot of peahen’s and Indian bears.
Also the nearest place to madhugiri is Jayamangali Blackbuck Reserve it’s a reserve forest with several number of black bucks and also we can spot some leopards on a pleasant lucky day. But need to take prior permissions from forest dept before entering the reserve.
