The mighty Himalayan peaks scale towering heights in the north of the Indian sub-continent, and are amongst the highest known mountain peaks in the world. The sheer height above sea level causes them to have a weather which is so harsh and difficult t to compromise that winter trekking is a strict no-do for most places. However, for the brave and passionate trekkers who do not mind the cold in pursuit of some absolutely stunning scenes over the trek, there are numerous places in the Himalayas to head to. The peak of Kedarkantha and the trek to it is amongst some of the most beautiful journeys which can be undertaken in the mountains.
There are many reasons why the Kedarkantha trek has been the first love for winter trekking enthusiasts. To start with, the trek commences from a stretch of alpine forests which is paved with brown leaves, which crunch at every footstep. The starting point of the trek – Sankri is a small forgotten village in the heart of the Himalayas, which is an amalgamation of the natural order and the vibrant human civilization, for all to witness. The trek would also need you to be driven around in the Himalayas to reach the start points of the trek, and these drives will take you through some breath-taking points to view and cherish upon in the Himalyas. Places such as Purola, Nowgaon, and Mori etc are characterized by the lush green valleys and alpine natural beauty of the Himalayas.
The entire length of the trek is thronged with some of the most famous peaks and summits in the Himalayas, and this makes the trek more like a drive through these famous peaks. The campsites such as the Juda-ka-talab are serene and bountiful to stay and look at , basking in the natural glow.
Brief Itinerary :
Day 1: Drive from Dehradun to Sankri (6,450 ft).
Day 2: Trek from Sankri (6,450 ft) to Juda Ka Talab (9,100 ft).
Day 3: Trek from Juda Ka Talab (9,100ft) to Kedarkantha Base (10,600 ft).
Day 4: Trek from Kedarkantha Base (10,600 ft) to Kedarkantha Peak and back to Kedarkantha Base.
Day 5: Trek from Kedarkantha Base (10,600 ft) to Sankri.
Day 6: Sankri to Dehradun Drive back
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 : Drive from Dehradun to Sankri (6,450 ft, 8 hrs)
We will arrange the transport and they will meet you at Dehradun railway station to pick you for long but scenic drive Sankri via Mussoorie, Purola, Mori, Netwar along the Tons River. On arrival set out camp for overnight stay.
Day 2 : Trek from Sankri to Juda Ka Talab (9,000 ft, 4 hrs)
After morning exercise we will have our breakfast and start the trek around 8 AM for our next camp Juda Ka Talab. We will camp beside the small pond surrounded by Pine and Oak trees. One can have beautiful views of snow clad peaks from Juda Ka Talab campsite.
Day 3 : Trek from Juda Ka Talab to Kedarkantha Base (10,600 ft, 4 hrs)
Get up early morning to see the golden glow of snow clad peaks. Post breakfast start the trek to Kedarkantha Peak base which takes around 4 hrs to reach Kedarkantha Peak base. Enjoy hot lunch and explore the area.
Day 4 : Trek from Kedarkantha Base to Kedarkantha Peak and back to Kedarkantha Base (12,500 ft, 7-8 hrs)
Today is a long day trek up to the summit of Kedarkantha peak, have your lunch with amazing views of snow clad peaks of Yamunotri and Gangotri ranges. After spending some quality time at the peak we trek back to nearby camping site at the Kedarkantha Base.
Day 5 : Trek from Kedarkantha Base to Sankri (4-5 hrs)
Trek down from Kedarkantha Base to Sankri via Hargaon on well marked trail by stones. Trek down through thick forest of Pine and Maple trees and at some places you will have open views of beautiful Har Ki Dun valley.
Day 6 : Sankri – Dehradun Drive back
Drive back from Sankri to Dehradun will take around 10 hours which is around 200km.
